Social Media Is Stealing You From God: Heart-wrenching truth

Social media has become an integral part of our lives, providing us with a platform to stay connected, share our thoughts and experiences, and discover new ideas. While it offers numerous benefits, such as instant communication and access to information, there is also a downside that often goes unnoticed – mindless scrolling.

The theory behind scrolling is rooted in the concept of intermittent reinforcement. Intermittent reinforcement is a behavioral psychology term that refers to providing rewards or stimuli in an unpredictable manner. In the context of social media, this means that when we scroll through our feeds, we are constantly exposed to a mixture of interesting and mundane content. The occasional appearance of exciting or engaging posts triggers a dopamine release in our brains, creating a pleasurable feeling and leaving us wanting more.

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that plays a crucial role in the brain’s reward system, regulating pleasure and motivation. When we encounter something novel or exciting on social media, such as an entertaining video or an intriguing article, our brain releases dopamine, reinforcing the behavior and making us crave for more. This dopamine-driven cycle of reward and anticipation keeps us hooked to our screens, leading to hours of mindless scrolling.

How then do we break free from our screen addiction and utilize the valuable time God has given us?

In a world filled with distractions and temptations, it is easy to lose focus and wander aimlessly through life. However, as Christians, we are called to live purposefully, seeking God’s wisdom in all that we do. Ephesians 5:15-16 encourages us to make the most of our time wisely. Social media can be a significant time sink. Setting boundaries and allocating time intentionally, making room for prayer, Bible study, and other essential aspects of our relationship with God, thus, becomes vital.

In addition to the addictive nature of scrolling, social media can also be overwhelming due to the vast amount of information it presents. With the constant stream of posts, articles, videos, and advertisements, it’s easy to get lost in the sea of information. The sheer volume and variety of content can be confusing, making it difficult to distinguish between reliable sources, valuable insights, and meaningless noise. Often times we fall prey to wrong doctrines and fail to recognize the voice of God.

Social media can fuel the desire for comparison and envy (1 Timothy 6:6-7). Instead of coveting what others have, we must practice contentment in Christ and give thanks to God for everything (I Thessalonians 5:18). We should also celebrate the blessings of others without jealousy.

As followers of Christ, we are called to build others up (1 Thessalonians 5:11). So we could use our social media presence to encourage, uplift, and inspire others and share Scripture, testimonies, and positive messages that bring glory to God. Proverbs 15:1 reminds us that a gentle answer turns away wrath. Online discussions can quickly escalate into arguments or conflicts. It is thus important to strive to respond calmly and constructively, even in the face of disagreement.

Proverbs 4:23 advises us to guard our hearts, as everything we do flows from it. Social media can expose us to various influences, so it’s essential to be discerning about the content we consume and share.
